Special Education

At P.S. 326, supporting students in Kindergarten through Grade 2 is a priority, and the school’s School-Based Support Team (SBST) works closely with families and staff to ensure that young learners receive the services and supports they need to succeed. The school maintains a positive and supportive learning environment, reflected in consistently low incidences of disciplinary actions across all student groups. This strong school climate helps create a space where students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

Through the SBST process, families who request evaluations are guided through a clear and supportive system. Families are contacted within three business days of submitting an evaluation request and receive a welcome packet that outlines the evaluation process, timelines, and important contact information. Each family is also assigned a dedicated point of contact to provide personalized guidance and answer questions throughout the process.

P.S. 326 offers a continuum of special education services to meet the diverse needs of students in Kindergarten through Grade 2. Depending on a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), students may receive related services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy (OT), and physical therapy (PT). These services support students’ communication, fine and gross motor development, and overall access to the curriculum.

Students may also be supported through a variety of instructional settings designed to promote both academic growth and inclusion. These include Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classrooms, where general education and special education teachers collaborate to provide differentiated instruction within the general education setting, as well as 12:1 special class settings, which provide a smaller student-to-teacher ratio and more individualized support for students who require a more structured learning environment.

To ensure families feel supported throughout the evaluation process, the school uses a streamlined tracking and communication system that monitors paperwork completion and provides reminders before deadlines. Personalized follow-up through phone calls and emails helps families stay on track and ensures the process moves forward without unnecessary delays.

The School-Based Support Team also uses real-time data and family feedback to continuously improve its practices. Tools such as a Family Support Log and Paperwork Completion Tracker allow staff to identify families who may need additional support and provide targeted assistance.

Through early identification, strong family partnerships, and a full range of instructional and related services, P.S. 326 ensures that students in Kindergarten through Grade 2 receive the individualized support they need.
