Support for English Language Learners at P.S. 326

P.S. 326 is an early childhood center that serves children from 3K through second grade. Because our students are very young, all of our English Language Learners (ELLs) are considered “Newcomers,” meaning they are just beginning to learn English. Currently, 
At P.S. 326, we believe that every child’s language, culture, and experiences are strengths that enrich our school community.

 Our goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel confident, valued, and excited to learn. By working closely together—teachers, specialists, and families—we ensure that our English Language Learners receive the support they need to develop strong language skills, succeed academically, and grow as curious, capable learners. We are proud to partner with our families as we support each child on their learning journey.

At P.S. 326, we are committed to helping every child grow academically while developing strong English language skills. Our teachers use supportive strategies and scaffolds to make sure students can understand lessons and participate in learning.

How We Support English Language Learners


Collaboration between teachers:

Our English as a New Language (ENL) teacher works closely with classroom teachers to support students based on their current language level. This teamwork helps ensure that students receive lessons that are age-appropriate, engaging, and academically challenging.

Different types of instruction:

Students receive ENL support in two ways:

These lessons focus on building vocabulary, understanding language structures, and connecting new learning to what students already know.

Push-in support, where the ENL teacher works with students inside their classroom.
Stand-alone instruction, where students work in small groups with the ENL teacher to focus on language development.

Support for students with IEPs:

If a student is an English Language Learner and also has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), they receive additional support from a special education teacher. Teachers regularly communicate with one another to make sure students receive the best support possible.


Using data to support learning:

Teachers review student progress regularly and use that information to adjust instruction and provide the right level of support for each child.

Classroom Learning

ENL students learn both English language skills and grade-level subjects, mostly in English, with supports that match their language level. When helpful, support in students’ home languages may also be provided.

Our school environment is small, welcoming, and student-centered, which allows teachers to work closely with students and families.

Students learn through a variety of activities, including:
  • Whole-group lessons where teachers introduce new topics
  • Small-group instruction for targeted support
  • Hands-on learning with manipulatives, visuals, graphic organizers, vocabulary cards, and anchor charts
  • Student learning centers that help develop listening skills, build vocabulary, and incorporate technology across subjects
These activities help students stay engaged and strengthen their understanding of both language and academic content.

ENL Service Model

ENL services at P.S. 326 are designed to connect directly with what students are learning in their classrooms.

Students at the Entering and Emerging levels may receive pull-out instruction (small-group lessons with the ENL teacher) along with classroom support.

Students at the Transitioning level typically receive a combination of stand-alone and in-class support as they continue to develop their English skills.
